Biography

I am honored to be teaching English Language Learners at South Union Elementary School. I am a lifetime learner and I teach students to expect their education to extend to high school graduation and beyond.  Education is a prize worth working for, and I can use my own journey as an example of that. In my previous career, I earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Management from Upper Iowa University (as I worked full time in their Financial Aid Office).  I earned a Bachelors Degree in Education from Grand View College (as I worked full time in their Financial Aid and Alumni Relations Offices).  I earned my English as a Second Language Endorsement (as I worked full time as a classroom teacher for DMPS).  Higher education has it's price, but the rewards are well worth it!

Biography

Hello, I'm Bob Tyler and this is my fifth year of teaching and learning at South Union Elementary! I am very proud to be able to serve the 120+ English language learners in our school.  I am passionate about meeting the educational, cultural, and language acquisition needs of our immigrant and refugee students, as well as all students who come from families with more than one language in their homes.  I began my teaching career over twenty years ago, teaching English in Tokyo, Japan, and I hope to continue teaching for Des Moines Public Schools for another twenty years to come!  I live in Des Moines and have two children: Ava, who attends Hubbell Elementary, and Henry, who attends Merrill Middle School.  In my spare time I enjoy studying Japanese, traveling, cooking, reading, and playing guitar.
