Students at 35 Des Moines schools and three learning centers can now eat breakfast and lunch at no cost because of a special U.S. Dept. of Agriculture program targeting high poverty schools throughout the U.S. The move will ensure students are focused on learning and not on hunger. South Union Elementary School students said goodbye to departing 5th graders and retiring teachers with a ‘clap out’ as school was dismissed. There were hugs, tears and smiles. Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds visited her great niece and nephew at South Union Elementary. She started in Mrs. Baldinelli’s 5th grade classroom and talked about career choices and her job. Then she visited Mrs. Pope’s first grade classroom to read, “Duck For President.” Click the picture to see more of her visit.
Matthew Card from the Blank Park Zoo brought his rabbit and Marine Toad to see the kindergarten students at South Union. The students learned that the Marine Toad is the largest species of toad in the world and it comes from Central America. The toad must have really liked Mrs. Welker’s class. Students earned this day as a whole class positive behavior reward. They earned the reward by filling in states on a U.S.A puzzle. Once the puzzle was complete, they voted on a reward. Fancy Schmancy day was pretty much a unanimous vote! …
